Quillette on Instagram: ”“Why does anyone go to college? The most popular answer given by American college freshmen from 1991 to 2019 was, “To be able to get a better job.” The Higher Education Research Institute (HERI) at UCLA, which conducted an annual survey of full-time students at some 200 four-year colleges, routinely found 75 to 85 percent gave that answer, though many also said, “To make more money.” The next most popular answer during those decades was, “To learn more about things that interest me.” Trailing these answers but still widely endorsed was the ambition, “To gain a general education and appreciation of ideas.” I don’t have access to more recent results but I suspect the students are still saying much the same. Those answers, however, merely scratch the surface. The real reasons, then and now, that students go to college are hidden in a mixture of social expectations, family dynamics, ambitions, emotional longing, and inertia, covered with a veneer of socially acceptable rationalizations. That mixture is powerful enough to move more than 60 percent of high-school graduates to enroll in college instead of entering the workforce, joining the military, apprenticing for a trade, or dubious options such as idling at home, wandering around, online gaming, or a life of crime. Going to college still looks to most Americans as a better choice than going to war or a life of dissolution, but recent evidence suggests that students completing high school are beginning to rethink the idea that college is necessarily the best path. “More High-School Grads Forgo College in Hot Labor Market” declares the Wall Street Journal. There’s that, but American higher education—and perhaps education throughout the Anglophone world—is in the midst of a transformation that goes beyond the vagaries of the job market.” Read more at the link in bio.”
Tablet Magazine on Instagram: “Conversions to Reform Judaism are on the rise, a trend other rabbis agree was accelerated by the pandemic. According to Reform rabbis, Jewish organizations, and those converting, a significant number of those converts belong to the LGBTQ+ community. “Judaism is becoming increasingly attractive to those seeking a new spiritual home,” said one rabbi, “at a time when people can transition between identities like never before—including religion and gender.” “People are looking for religious communities that celebrate them authentically expressing themselves,” said another rabbi. “Helping people answer their own questions makes Judaism so strong. Reform Judaism is bringing these questions to the community, not just individually.” Head to the link in bio to read more.”
The Washington Times on Instagram: “President Biden insisted Monday that he was truthful when he claimed he had never spoken to his son Hunter Biden about business deals despite the release of an alleged text message in which the first son threatened a Chinese businessman and said he was “with my father.” “No,” Mr. Biden said responding to a reporter’s question about whether he lied about speaking with Hunter Biden about business deals. Mr. Biden‘s remarks, which occurred during a White House event to promote high-speed internet access, is the first time the president has addressed the growing scandal.”

We should want everyone in this country to succeed, support themselves and contribute to society. Learning English is central to that achievement. Everyone wins with English. While our broken school systems are nonsensically teaching our children Spanish or some other language they will barely use, the rest of the world is learning English, especially the Chinese.”″

The Wall Street Journal on Instagram: “Severe fungal disease used to be a freak occurrence. Now it is a threat to millions of vulnerable Americans, and treatments have been losing efficacy as fungal pathogens develop resistance to standard drugs. Medical experts say one reason for the surge is that more people have compromised immune systems, including cancer patients and those taking medicines after organ transplants. Compounding the problem, research shows, is that rising temperatures appear to have expanded the geographical range of some deadly fungal pathogens, and possibly made them better adapted to human hosts. The failure of some doctors to recognize quickly enough what is happening to stricken patients is causing deaths and complications they could have prevented. Hazardous fungi are everywhere. They live inside our bodies and on our skin. They are abundant in the air, water and soil. Healthy people typically keep them at bay, but when immunity is compromised, yeasts and molds can invade the bloodstream, lungs, brain and other organs. Most at risk are the estimated 10 million people in the U.S. whose immune systems have been weakened. A 2022 survey of 500 infectious-disease doctors by researchers at the University of Iowa and University of California, San Francisco, identified fungal infections as among the diseases most frequently diagnosed late. Failure to consider fungal disease was most often to blame, the doctors said. Read more at the link in our bio. ”
The Washington Times on Instagram: “The House Appropriations Committee approved a bill that would inject $2.1 billion into border wall construction and would prod the Biden administration to stop slow-walking the building effort. The bill, which cleared on a 33-25 vote, would also add thousands of agents to the ranks of the Border Patrol and expand the amount of detention beds available to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement to hold illegal immigrants.”

The Washington Times on Instagram: “Although the Wagner forces’ march toward Moscow on Saturday ended without a full-blown security meltdown, questions mounted Sunday over a deal struck between Mr. Putin and Mr. Prigozhin, a onetime protege of the Russian leader. Uncertainty grew over the future role of the paramilitary group, which the Kremlin has used as a backbone of its war in Ukraine.”
Wall Street Journal Opinion on Instagram: “The biggest surprise about Yevgeny Prigozhin’s armed rebellion against Russia’s military generals is that the Kremlin had clear warnings that a coup attempt was imminent and did nothing to prevent it, writes Amy Knight for @wsjopinion. Prigozhin, financier of the Wagner Group private army, has conducted a bitter feud with Putin’s generals for months. But recently he went to alarming extremes. In early June, Prigozhin’s social-media channel showed a video in which the officer confessed to ordering his troops to fire on a Wagner convoy. That same day, Prigozhin called for Russia’s Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu and Valery Gerasimov, chief of the General Staff, to be executed by a firing squad because of Russia’s failing campaign in Ukraine. He warned of a civil war in Russia similar to what occurred in 1917 if the military leadership wasn’t replaced. Some say Putin failed to rein in Prigozhin because he didn’t want to alienate the ultranationalists. Putin also might have used Prigozhin’s attacks to deflect responsibility for the war’s failures from himself and considered Prigozhin and his Wagner group a counterbalance to the Russian military. Whatever his reasons for letting Prigozhin pursue his vendetta against the military, Putin made a grave error that has seriously undermined his authority. The Russian president now appears to his countrymen and the world as a weak leader whose misjudgments led to an armed rebellion that threatened the regime, even raising concerns about nuclear weapons. The crisis has been resolved through negotiations with Belarusian President Lukashenko, and the Wagner leader has pulled his troops out of Russia. But the damage to Putin’s image will be permanent. The Washington Times on Instagram: “The Defense Department has traditionally covered travel expenses for military members and their families. The Washington Times on Instagram: “An FBI whistleblower has revealed to Congress that Deputy Director Paul Abbate threatened to fire agents and other bureau employees who said there were disparities in the responses to the U.S. Capitol riot in 2021 and the George Floyd riots in 2020. In an affidavit delivered to Congress, the unnamed FBI worker said Mr. Abbate made the threats during a secured video teleconference with the special agents in charge of the bureau’s 56 field offices. Mr. Abbate told these supervisors that some agents were questioning the massive investigative response to pro-Trump demonstrators storming the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. “Abbate told the audience that anyone who questions the FBI’s response or his decisions regarding the response to Jan. 6 did not belong in the FBI and should find a different job — or something to that effect,” according to the affidavit.”
